Biodiversity Net Gain in The Broads Authority LPA
.avif)
The Broads Authority governs the Broads, a unique protected wetland area in Norfolk and Suffolk, covering approximately 303 square kilometres. Known for its network of rivers, lakes, reedbeds, and wet grasslands, the Broads is internationally important for biodiversity, recreation, and heritage.
The Broads Authority is responsible for planning and development control within the area and enforces Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements in line with the Environment Act 2021. Development proposals must deliver at least 10% BNG, often through habitat creation, restoration, or off-site biodiversity credits.
Situated within The Broads National Character Area, the landscape is defined by extensive wetlands, open water, fen, and reedbeds, supporting important species such as bittern, otter, water vole, and rare aquatic plants.
Effective BNG delivery in The Broads focuses on enhancing wetland habitats, improving water quality, and maintaining connectivity between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
Our team provides expert BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and metric calculations tailored to the unique wetland environment of The Broads.
Habitats in The Broads Authority LPA
.avif)
The Broads’ habitats are dominated by wetland and aquatic environments critical for biodiversity.
Wetland and Aquatic Habitats
Reedbeds: Extensive stands providing breeding and feeding habitat for bitterns, warblers, and wetland invertebrates.
Fen and Marsh: Nutrient-rich wetlands supporting diverse plants, amphibians, and birds.
Open Water Bodies (Broads): Lakes and slow-flowing rivers supporting fish, otters, and aquatic invertebrates.
Grassland and Farmland Habitats
Wet Grassland and Floodplain Meadows: Seasonally flooded meadows rich in wildflowers and important for wading birds.
Improved Grassland: Present around the wetlands with potential for enhancement via wetland features and field margins.
Woodland and Scrub Habitats
Wet Woodland: Typically alder and willow carr alongside water bodies, supporting birds and invertebrates.
Scrub: Important transitional habitat for birds and mammals.
Hedgerows and Linear Features
Species-Rich Hedgerows and Ditches: Crucial for connectivity and providing habitat corridors in the agricultural matrix.
The Broads Authority LPA BNG Planning
High distinctiveness habitats such as reedbeds, fen, and wet woodland require strict protection and restoration-focused BNG.
Lower distinctiveness habitats like wet grassland and improved farmland offer flexible options for habitat creation and connectivity improvements.
