Biodiversity Net Gain and Nutrient Neutrality solutions.
Achieve compliance and move forward with your development.

Trusted by Developers and Landowners
Planning Approval Without Delays
Since February 2024, most developments in England require a 10% biodiversity net gain. In 74 Local Planning Authority areas, you also need to prove nutrient neutrality.
Without these in place, your planning application will stall.
Finding compliant solutions takes time. Securing land for habitat creation is complex. Negotiating with ecologists, landowners, and Local Planning Authorities can add months to your timeline.
Greenshank operates a national network of habitat banks and nutrient mitigation schemes. Each is legally secured with Section 106 agreements or conservation covenants, managed for 30 years, and approved by Local Planning Authorities.
You purchase the units you need, receive legal documentation for your planning submission, and your obligation is discharged. We handle the land acquisition, habitat creation, ecological monitoring, and long-term management.

Biodiversity Net Gain: What You Need to Know
Every development is assessed using the Defra biodiversity metric. This calculates how many "biodiversity units" your site loses through construction. You must create or purchase units worth 110% of what's lost - that's your 10% net gain.
Our offsite habitat banks provide:
• Habitat units in your Local Planning Authority area
• 30-year legal security with Section 106 agreements or conservation covenants
• Biodiversity improvements that are additional to existing obligations
• Legal documentation within 5 working days of purchase
We develop schemes all across England. Each has a detailed habitat management plan, monitored annually, with clear ecological targets.

Nutrient Neutrality: When It Applies
74 of the Local Planning Authorities in England currently require nutrient neutrality. This applies where developments increase nutrient pollution (nitrogen or phosphorus) to water catchments that feed protected habitats.
You must offset the additional nutrients your development generates through wastewater. Without an offset, you won't get planning permission.
Our nutrient mitigation schemes:
• Wetland and catchment management systems that remove nutrients before they reach sensitive habitats
• Section 106-secured projects accepted by Natural England
• Proprietary drainage ditch management methodology
• Strategic locations in affected catchments nationally
Greenshank's CEO, Dr Gabriel Connor Streich, contributed to Natural England’s technical guidance on the regulatory standards now in force, so we know exactly what planning authorities will and won't accept.

Reduce Costs with Onsite Solutions
Reduce credit costs before buying credits
In almost every case, we can design onsite mitigation that reduces your biodiversity deficit or nutrient load, lowering the number of offsite units you need to buy.
We're so confident in this approach that we only charge the success fee if it delivers.
Our engineered onsite solutions include:
• Drainage ditch management for nutrient reduction
• Habitat creation within your development boundary
• Application in any catchment
We'll assess your site, design the solution, and provide the evidence for planning submission.
