Mid Sussex, located in West Sussex, encompasses a predominantly rural district with market towns, villages, and significant areas of natural landscape. Covering about 330 square kilometres, the district includes key towns such as Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, and East Grinstead, surrounded by woodlands, farmland, and chalk downlands.

Aligned with the Environment Act 2021, Mid Sussex District Council requires most development projects to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be met through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to ecological networks.

The LPA lies within the High Weald and the Low Weald National Character Areas, which influence its ecological character and support priority habitats such as ancient woodland, chalk grassland, and wetland habitats.

Mid Sussex’s combination of urban expansion and valuable natural habitats presents opportunities for BNG through woodland management, chalk grassland restoration, and pond creation.

For developers, landowners, and planning professionals in Mid Sussex, understanding local habitats, planning policies, and biodiversity priorities is essential. Our team offers BNG assessments, habitat surveys, and ecological consultancy.
