The Hempnall Beck Mitigation Scheme is a nature-based solution designed to unlock sustainable development in Norfolk while restoring precious freshwater ecosystems. Developed by Greenshank Environmental in partnership with HP & BK Sargent & Partners, the scheme offers nutrient neutrality credits by revitalising a degraded watercourse that feeds into the ecologically sensitive Broads Habitats Sites.
The scheme focuses on a 480-metre stretch of Hempnall Beck—a small, historically managed stream that currently contributes excess nitrogen and phosphorus to the River Yare. By re-engineering the channel using Greenshank’s Drainage Ditch Management framework, the scheme will slow the flow of nutrient-rich water, increase natural filtration through vegetation and soils, and create a thriving linear wetland.
Key features include a two-stage channel design, large woody debris to promote habitat diversity, and new floodplain benches lined with native planting. The surrounding grazing land will be enhanced with 10-metre buffer strips, helping to stabilise banks, reduce erosion, and keep livestock out of the watercourse.
Crucially, this project delivers certified, high-integrity nutrient credits backed by Natural England’s guidance. These credits will be legally secured for 80+ years through a Section 106 agreement, providing confidence and certainty for developers navigating Habitat Regulations.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the scheme offers broader environmental benefits: improved biodiversity, carbon sequestration, better flood management, and healthier rivers for generations to come.
