Biodiversity Net Gain in Thanet LPA Local Planning Authority

Thanet, located on the northeastern tip of Kent, is a district authority characterised by a coastal landscape with urban centres, agricultural land, and valuable natural habitats. Covering approximately 140 square kilometres, the district includes towns such as Margate, Ramsgate, and Broadstairs, alongside chalk cliffs, wetlands, and grasslands.

Aligned with the Environment Act 2021, Thanet District Council requires most development projects to achieve a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be delivered through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to ecological networks.

The LPA is situated within the North Kent Plain National Character Area, supporting habitats such as chalk grasslands, coastal cliffs, wetlands, and woodlands.

The blend of urban and natural landscapes offers opportunities for BNG through grassland restoration, wetland enhancement, woodland management, and coastal habitat protection.

For developers, landowners, and planning professionals in Thanet, understanding local habitats, planning policies, and biodiversity priorities is key. Our team provides tailored BNG assessments, habitat surveys, and ecological consultancy.
