Biodiversity Net Gain in Warwick LPA Local Planning Authority

Warwick, located in Warwickshire, combines historic urban centres with surrounding rural landscapes. Covering around 100 square kilometres, the district includes Warwick town, Leamington Spa, and several villages, offering a varied ecological and landscape setting.

Aligned with the Environment Act 2021, Warwick District Council requires most development projects to achieve at least 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be delivered through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity credits, or contributions to strategic ecological networks.

The area falls largely within the National Character Areas Trent Valley Washlands, Dunsmore and Feldon, and Arden. These NCAs are characterised by ancient woodlands, species-rich grasslands, river corridors, and floodplain habitats that shape Warwick’s biodiversity.

The mix of urban expansion and valuable natural habitats creates both challenges and opportunities for effective BNG delivery, necessitating detailed ecological surveys and alignment with local biodiversity action plans.

Our team supports developers, landowners, and planning professionals with BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and access to local biodiversity offsetting options.

Habitats in Warwick LPA Local Planning Authority

Warwick District’s ecological landscape includes a range of habitats supporting diverse flora and fauna.

Cropland and Farmland Habitats

Arable and pastoral farming dominates, with scope for habitat enhancement via field margins, hedgerow restoration, and beetle banks.

Hedgerows and Linear Features

Species-Rich Hedgerows: Key wildlife corridors linking habitats across the district.

Ditches and Field Margins: Provide important linear habitats and drainage functions.

Warwick LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as lowland meadows, ancient woodland, wet woodland, and floodplain grazing marsh are crucial for significant biodiversity gain and require careful protection and management.

Lower distinctiveness habitats, including improved grassland and arable land, offer opportunities for enhancement and on-site BNG delivery through targeted habitat improvements.
