Biodiversity Net Gain in South Kesteven LPA Local Planning Authority

South Kesteven, located in southern Lincolnshire, is a large and varied district covering approximately 940 square kilometres. It includes the towns of Grantham, Stamford, Bourne, and Market Deeping, alongside extensive rural areas, river valleys, and arable farmland. The district’s mix of limestone uplands, clay lowlands, and historic parklands gives rise to a diverse ecological character.

In line with the Environment Act 2021, South Kesteven District Council requires most developments to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be achieved through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, the use of off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to strategic ecological networks.

The district overlaps with several National Character Areas (NCAs), including the Kesteven Uplands, the Fens, and the Trent and Belvoir Vales. These landscapes support a wide range of priority habitats such as lowland calcareous grassland, mixed deciduous woodland, and species-rich hedgerows.

Opportunities for BNG in South Kesteven are varied and include woodland expansion, grassland restoration, and enhancement of riparian corridors and field boundaries.

We offer BNG metric assessments, habitat surveys, and strategic advice tailored to South Kesteven’s planning context and ecological priorities.

Habitats in South Kesteven LPA Local Planning Authority

South Kesteven contains a range of natural and semi-natural habitats of relevance for BNG delivery.

Grassland and Farmland Habitats

Lowland Calcareous Grassland: Present on limestone slopes and ridges, supporting rare plants and butterflies.

Improved and Semi-Improved Grassland: Found in farmland and parkland settings, offering scope for enhancement.

Arable Land and Field Margins: Dominant across the district, with high potential for biodiversity uplift through buffer strips, nectar mixes, and beetle banks.

Woodland and Scrub Habitats

Lowland Mixed Deciduous Woodland: Widespread in parklands and rural estates, supporting birds, bats, and invertebrates.

Traditional Orchards and Scrub: Valuable small-scale habitats, often in decline, providing foraging and nesting resources.

Rivers and Streams: Including the River Witham and River Glen, supporting aquatic plants, fish, otters, and kingfishers.

Floodplain Grazing Marsh: Located near rivers and streams, offering habitat for wetland birds and amphibians.

Ponds and Reedbeds: Common in farmland and parkland landscapes.

Hedgerows and Linear Features

Species-Rich Hedgerows: A key feature of the South Kesteven countryside, vital for ecological connectivity.

Green Lanes and Ditches: Linear habitats supporting insects, small mammals, and birds.

South Kesteven LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats—such as calcareous grasslands, mature woodlands, and river corridors—are priorities for BNG in South Kesteven and should be conserved and enhanced wherever possible.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like improved grassland and arable fields can be used flexibly for on-site BNG delivery via habitat diversification, hedgerow planting, and wetland creation.
