Biodiversity Net Gain in South Derbyshire LPA Local Planning Authority

South Derbyshire is a district in Derbyshire, East Midlands, covering around 360 square kilometres. It comprises a mix of rural villages, market towns such as Swadlincote and Melbourne, and agricultural landscapes interspersed with woodlands and river valleys including parts of the River Trent.

South Derbyshire District Council requires most development schemes to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in line with the Environment Act 2021. BNG can be achieved through habitat creation or enhancement on-site, off-site biodiversity units, or through contributions to wider landscape-scale biodiversity initiatives.

The district falls mainly within National Character Areas Needwood and South Derbyshire Claylands, Trent Valley Washlands, and Melbourne Parklands, characterised by lowland farmland, wet woodlands, and river floodplains. Priority habitats include wet woodlands, floodplain grazing marsh, species-rich hedgerows, and ponds.

The area offers opportunities to restore wetland habitats and enhance riparian corridors to support biodiversity within this mixed-use landscape.

We provide BNG assessment, habitat mapping, and habitat creation planning services tailored for South Derbyshire.

Ponds and Reedbeds: Provide habitat for amphibians, dragonflies, and wetland birds.

South Derbyshire LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as wet woodlands, floodplain grazing marsh, and river corridors are priorities for protection and restoration to achieve significant biodiversity gains.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like improved grasslands and arable land can be enhanced through planting of wildflower margins, hedgerow restoration, and wetland creation.
