Biodiversity Net Gain in North York Moors National Park LPA
.avif)
The North York Moors National Park, located in North Yorkshire, North East England, covers approximately 1,436 square kilometres of heather moorland, ancient woodland, river valleys, and rugged coastline. The park is characterised by its extensive upland habitats and cultural landscapes shaped by centuries of grazing and farming.
As the planning authority within its boundary, the North York Moors National Park Authority enforces Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements in line with the Environment Act 2021. Development proposals within the park are expected to deliver a minimum of 10% BNG through habitat enhancement, restoration, or offsetting.
Situated within the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills National Character Area, the park supports important upland habitats such as heather moorland, acid grassland, and ancient woodland. These habitats provide refuge for key species including curlew, merlin, red squirrel, and rare lichens.
Implementing BNG in the North York Moors focuses on protecting upland heath and grassland, restoring ancient woodlands, and enhancing riparian corridors to improve habitat connectivity.
Our consultancy offers specialist BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and metric calculations tailored to the upland and coastal environment of the North York Moors.
