Biodiversity Net Gain in North West Leicestershire LPA Local Planning Authority

North West Leicestershire is a district in Leicestershire, East Midlands, covering approximately 370 square kilometres. The district includes the towns of Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, alongside rural villages, farmland, woodlands, and former coal mining landscapes. The area features a diverse mix of urban, industrial, and natural habitats.

North West Leicestershire District Council requires most developments to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in accordance with the Environment Act 2021. BNG can be achieved through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to local and regional ecological networks.

The district lies within National Character Area Leicestershire and South Derbyshire Coalfield, characterised by farmland, woodland patches, hedgerows, and waterways including the River Mease and its tributaries.

There are opportunities to restore post-industrial sites, expand woodland cover, and improve riparian habitats to enhance biodiversity.

Our team offers BNG assessments, habitat surveys, and ecological advice tailored to North West Leicestershire developments.

Habitats in North West Leicestershire LPA Local Planning Authority

North West Leicestershire supports a variety of habitats important for biodiversity net gain.

Grassland and Farmland Habitats

Arable Land and Field Margins: Crop fields suitable for wildflower strips and beetle banks.

Species-Rich Hedgerows: Provide important corridors linking habitats.

Wetland and Watercourse Habitats

Rivers and Streams: The River Mease is a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC), supporting rare aquatic species.

Ponds and Wet Meadows: Provide habitat for amphibians and wetland birds.

North West Leicestershire LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as lowland mixed woodland and protected river corridors like the River Mease SAC should be prioritised for conservation and enhancement.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like improved grassland and arable land can be improved with wildflower planting, hedgerow restoration, and wetland creation.
