Biodiversity Net Gain in Mid Suffolk LPA Local Planning Authority

Mid Suffolk, situated in the heart of Suffolk, East Anglia, is predominantly rural with a landscape characterised by gently rolling countryside, market towns, and villages. Covering approximately 870 square kilometres, the district supports a rich mosaic of farmland, woodlands, and wetland habitats.

Aligned with the Environment Act 2021, Mid Suffolk District Council requires most development projects to achieve a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be met through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity credits, or contributions to local and strategic ecological networks.

The Mid Suffolk LPA lies largely within the National Character Areas South Norfolk and High Suffolk Claylands, and South Suffolk and North Essex Clayland. These NCAs influence the area’s biodiversity, with habitats such as ancient woodlands, hedgerows, lowland meadows, and river valleys forming important ecological features.

The rural nature of Mid Suffolk presents strong opportunities for BNG, but also requires careful planning to balance agricultural land use with habitat enhancement and connectivity.

Our team offers expert support in BNG assessments, habitat surveys, and advising on local biodiversity priorities for developers, landowners, and planning professionals.

Mid Suffolk’s ecological character is shaped by a mix of priority habitats supporting diverse species.

Grassland Habitats

Lowland Meadows: Species-rich meadows on neutral to calcareous soils, vital for pollinators and ground-nesting birds.

Improved Grassland: Extensive across farmland, with scope for enhancement through management and wildflower planting.

Woodland and Forest Habitats

Ancient and Semi-Natural Woodland: Scattered woodlands supporting a variety of mammals, birds, and invertebrates.

Wet Woodland: Found along watercourses and low-lying areas.

Ponds and Reedbeds: Supporting amphibians, dragonflies, and water birds.

Cropland and Farmland Habitats

Predominantly arable farming with opportunities for field margin creation, beetle banks, and hedgerow restoration.

Hedgerows and Linear Features

Species-Rich Hedgerows: Extensive network serving as wildlife corridors.

Ditches and Field Margins: Provide valuable habitat connectivity and drainage.

Mid Suffolk LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as lowland meadows, ancient woodland, and floodplain grazing marsh are central to delivering meaningful biodiversity gain and require protection and sensitive management.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like improved grassland and arable land offer practical opportunities for habitat enhancement and on-site BNG delivery.
