Biodiversity Net Gain in Hinckley and Bosworth LPA Local Planning Authority

Hinckley and Bosworth is a district in southwest Leicestershire, East Midlands, covering approximately 225 square kilometres. The district includes the market town of Hinckley along with a mix of rural villages, farmland, and patches of woodland. The landscape features rolling agricultural land interspersed with river valleys and hedgerows.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council requires most developments to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in line with the Environment Act 2021. BNG may be achieved through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to local ecological networks.

The district lies within National Character Area Leicestershire and South Derbyshire Coalfield, characterised by farmland, hedgerows, lowland mixed woodlands, and watercourses including the River Sence and its tributaries.

There are opportunities to enhance biodiversity by restoring species-rich hedgerows, expanding woodland cover, and improving wetland habitats.

Our team provides BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and ecological advice tailored to Hinckley and Bosworth developments.

Hinckley and Bosworth LPA BNG Planning

Higher distinctiveness habitats such as lowland mixed woodland and species-rich hedgerows should be prioritised for protection and restoration to maximise biodiversity uplift.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like improved grassland and arable land can be enhanced through wildflower planting, hedgerow restoration, and wetland creation.
