Biodiversity Net Gain in Harborough LPA Local Planning Authority

Harborough is a district in Leicestershire, East Midlands, covering approximately 650 square kilometres. The district includes the market town of Market Harborough, along with numerous villages and expansive rural landscapes. The area is predominantly agricultural, featuring a mix of arable farmland, grasslands, woodlands, and watercourses.

Harborough District Council requires most developments to deliver a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in line with the Environment Act 2021. BNG can be achieved through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributions to local ecological networks.

The district lies within National Character Areas Nottinghamshire Vales and High Leicestershire, characterised by gently rolling farmland, mixed woodlands, species-rich hedgerows, and river valleys including the River Welland.

Opportunities exist to enhance biodiversity through restoration of hedgerows, creation of wildflower meadows, and protection of riparian habitats.

Our team offers comprehensive BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and ecological advice tailored for Harborough developments.

Harborough LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as species-rich hedgerows and lowland mixed woodland are key for achieving significant biodiversity gains.

Lower distinctiveness habitats such as improved grasslands and arable fields can be enhanced through wildflower planting, hedgerow restoration, and wetland feature creation.
