Biodiversity Net Gain in Fylde LPA Local Planning Authority

Fylde, located in Lancashire on the North West England coast, covers approximately 164 square kilometres. This predominantly rural borough includes a mixture of coastal landscapes, agricultural land, and small urban settlements such as Lytham St Annes and Kirkham. Fylde’s diverse habitats support a range of wildlife and contribute to the area’s ecological value.

Fylde Borough Council supports the implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in line with the Environment Act 2021, requiring most developments to achieve a minimum 10% net gain in biodiversity through on-site habitat creation, enhancement, or approved off-site units.

The area sits mainly within the Lancashire and Amounderness Plain National Character Area, characterized by flat lowland farmland, coastal dunes, salt marshes, and estuarine habitats. These habitats are important for priority species and include several BNG priority habitats under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, offering both opportunities and constraints for biodiversity net gain delivery.

Understanding Fylde’s landscape context and habitat distribution is vital for developers and planners to meet BNG obligations effectively.

Habitats in Fylde LPA Local Planning Authority

Fylde supports a variety of habitats shaped by its coastal and agricultural setting:

Grassland Habitats

Coastal and lowland meadows, some of which are species-rich.

Improved grasslands dominate the agricultural areas.

Wetland and Coastal Habitats

Coastal dunes, salt marshes, and estuarine habitats along the Fylde coastline.

Small ponds and reedbeds occur inland.

Woodland and Scrub Habitats

Small patches of broadleaved woodland and scrub are scattered across the borough.

Hedgerows are common, often species-rich and supporting diverse wildlife.

Hedgerows and Linear Features

Native hedgerows with associated ditches provide important wildlife corridors in the rural landscape.

Fylde LPA BNG Planning

Priority habitats such as coastal dunes, salt marshes, and species-rich lowland meadows are key targets for protection and enhancement in Fylde’s BNG strategy. Restoration or creation of these habitats can yield significant biodiversity uplift but requires careful management due to their sensitivity and ecological importance.

Enhancing improved grasslands, hedgerows, and small woodland patches through habitat management and creation offers practical options for on-site biodiversity net gain contributions.
