Biodiversity Net Gain in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole LPA Local Planning Authority

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) is a unitary authority on the south coast of England, covering approximately 85 square kilometres. The area is renowned for its extensive coastline, urban centres, and pockets of rural and green spaces, creating a diverse ecological landscape.

Aligned with the Environment Act 2021, BCP Council requires most development projects to achieve a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This can be accomplished through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site biodiversity units, or contributing to strategic ecological networks.

The LPA intersects with the National Character Areas of Dorset Heaths and New Forest, which shape the borough’s habitats. These include heathlands, coastal cliffs, woodlands, and freshwater habitats that are important for regional biodiversity and designated as priority habitats.

Balancing urban expansion with conservation presents challenges and opportunities for BNG delivery. Effective implementation involves detailed habitat surveys, alignment with local biodiversity action plans, and strategic habitat management.

Our team provides BNG assessments, habitat mapping, and links to local biodiversity offsetting schemes tailored for BCP’s unique coastal and urban environment.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole LPA BNG Planning

High distinctiveness habitats such as lowland heathland, ancient woodland, and coastal cliffs are central to biodiversity uplift efforts and require focused protection and enhancement.

Lower distinctiveness habitats like acid grassland and urban green spaces provide flexible opportunities for habitat creation and connectivity improvements.
